Freshman running back Ryan Williams had every intention to play this season for Virginia Tech when he committed in January, but after not playing in the first three games, he’s going to take a redshirt year.
Williams, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound native of Manassas, told the Daily Press in February that Tech’s coaching staff told him he would play this season. On Monday, he had a discussion with running-backs coach Billy Hite and opted to take a redshirt year after failing to climb above sixth on the tailback depth chart.
“I’m OK with it,” said Williams, from Stonewall Jackson High, who was considered by many recruiting analysts to be one of the nation’s top three running backs coming out of high school.
