Touted Tech back to take redshirt — dailypress.com

Freshman running back Ryan Williams had every intention to play this season for Virginia Tech when he committed in January, but after not playing in the first three games, he’s going to take a redshirt year.

Williams, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound native of Manassas, told the Daily Press in February that Tech’s coaching staff told him he would play this season. On Monday, he had a discussion with running-backs coach Billy Hite and opted to take a redshirt year after failing to climb above sixth on the tailback depth chart.

“I’m OK with it,” said Williams, from Stonewall Jackson High, who was considered by many recruiting analysts to be one of the nation’s top three running backs coming out of high school.

San Luis Obispo County’s website | 09/01/2008 | What happened to Virginia Tech?

Where do you want to begin? Petition drive? E-mail blitz? Talk-radio deluge? Or just grab the torches and pitchforks and storm the Merryman Center?

Virginia Tech’s money folks could make large coin if they hold a raffle. Winner gets to stand on the sideline at Lane Stadium and actually tear off the symbolic redshirt from quarterback Tyrod Taylor and take his headset as he runs onto the field.

The Hokies need something. Or to be more precise, they certainly needed something Saturday.

Out of Beamer’s lips: Tyrod will redshirt in 2008

Not sure how redshirting your most athletic player on offense really helps the team…

However, I’m sure the redshirt would come off quickly if Sean sprains his ankle against ECU.

HokieTV had the live conference and should have a viewable press conference available shortly.
