Sue W. Farquhar honored with emeritus status


Sue W. Farquhar, associate professor of foreign languages and literatures in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, was conferred the “associate professor emerita” title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors during the board’s quarterly meeting on Nov. 3.

Department of Music’s New River Valley Symphony to feature the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra horn section


Virginia Tech Department of Music’s New River Valley Symphony Series first concert of the season, featuring the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra Horn Section in Robert Schumann’s “Concert-piece for Four Horns” and the music of Berlioz and Mussorgsky/Ravel, will be held Saturday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. in Burruss Hall Auditorium on the university’s main campus.

Department of Theatre Arts presents Charles Mee’s Iphigenia 2.0


Virginia Tech Department of Theatre Arts presents Charles Mee’s “Iphigenia 2.0.” The piece will be directed by Department of Theatre Arts third year master of fine arts candidate Andrew Lee Dolan and performances will be held Nov. 14 through 16 and Nov. 18 through 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Squires Studio Theatre.

Fourth annual Gay in Appalachia event to feature Cynthia Burack


On Friday, Nov. 14, the LGBT faculty-staff caucus at Virginia Tech will host Cynthia Burack, associate professor of women’s studies at Ohio State and author of the recently published “Sin, Sex, and Democracy: Antigay Rhetoric and the Christian Right.” Burack will be the speaker for the 4th annual “Gay in Appalachia” event that evening, which is open to the public and will be held in the Old Dominion Ballroom of Squires Student Center. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. but the evening will commence with a reception at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Theater critic to speak on Russian theater in the last two decades


The Virginia Tech Department of Theatre Arts Graduate Program presents John Freedman, theater critic of The Moscow Times, speaking on Russian Theater and Drama Over the Last Two Decades, on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 3:30 p.m. in Room 105 of the Performing Arts Building. Admission is free.
