Winston-Salem Journal: Tar Heels let lead slip away, lose 20-17

Virginia Tech stormed from behind late yesterday to seize a game that North Carolina seemingly had under control.

The Hokies won 20-17 by taking advantage of a monumental Tar Heels collapse. The Tar Heels led 17-3 with 6:44 left in the third quarter after Greg Little’s 50-yard touchdown run, but fell apart almost immediately.

East Carolina

Lee was chewed out by head coach Skip Holtz for committing two penalties on running plays while lined up at wide receiver. ESPN - Virginia Tech’s infusion of youth

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer can’t remember the last time he’s taken so many rookies on their first road trip.

Beamer said 10 true freshmen and 15 redshirt freshmen are likely to play when the Hokies face East Carolina in Charlotte on Saturday. In all, there will be 30 players on the travel squad who have never played in a college game, meaning 41 percent of the travel squad will be new.

“It’s a little bit scary,” Beamer said.
