Bands, beef and bloggin’, baby …
Any of you Hokies still awake out there? It’s only 10 here in Lincoln, and I just ran into a fair number of Tech folks at Misty’s … the amazing steakhouse and sports lounge just about five miles from the stadium.

Call for nominations for membership in Phi Beta Delta
From: Terry Clements, Associate Professor, Landscape Architecture
Call for Nominations for membership in Phi Beta Delta, the Honor Society for International Scholars. The Virginia Tech Gamma Omega Chapter seeks your assistance in bringing the Society and the opportunity for new membership to the attention of qualified faculty, staff and students. Nominations are due: October 10th.
Affiliation with Phi Beta Delta (PBD) offers recognition of past and continuing activities and achievements in the international arena. Our chapter, in particular, provides a forum for individuals from various disciplines to meet in the interest of promoting a more enriching, internationally oriented, educational experience for those associated with Virginia Tech. It also provides the opportunity for faculty and staff members to interact with undergraduate and graduate students in a professional, yet informal, forum to exchange views on important international issues. As well, it is a means for faculty members to stay in touch with groups of like-minded scholars on other campuses throughout the United States and the world. Such networking opportunities constitute a valuable commodity in today’s competitive world. In addition, faculty and staff members are eligible for several prestigious annual awards made at the national level.
For further information about Phi Beta Delta, please consult our web site at: http://www.phibetadelta.org
Application forms can be obtained from tclement@vt.edu.
You may nominate qualified individuals by sending their names to Terry Clements at tclement@vt.edu as soon as possible. We will contact nominees directly. Please forward this announcement to others who may have suggestions for nominations for the awards or membership.
University employees launch charitable gift campaign
From: Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign steering committee
Each year the university coordinates the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC) through which university employees may contribute to a wide range of local, state, regional, and national non-profit organizations.
On Wednesday, Sept. 24, the 2008 campaign was formally kicked off with a luncheon for departmental representatives who will coordinate participation by their colleagues in the CVC. The designated spokesperson for this year’s campaign is Tom Tillar, vice president for alumni relations. Tillar and representatives of the local United Way and a social service agency spoke at the kick off luncheon, which gathered about 150 university employees and nonprofit organization representatives.
The CVC is the only state supported charitable giving program for state employees, providing an opportunity for them to choose among 1,400 charitable organizations to designate contributions, if they wish.
Tillar announced this year’s goal of $270,000, a slight increase over last year’s gifts totaling just over $260,000. Virginia Tech’s CVC contributions last year ranked fourth behind UVA, VCU and the Department of Transportation. “These are challenging economic times, which often create more health and human service needs to be addressed through the deserving agencies supported in the CVC”, Tillar emphasized. Steve Mouras, Director of Transportation, also was recognized for his dedicated leadership in spearheading the annual CVC campaign for the past 12 years.
The On-line Giving System and the traditional Pledge Card are both available for your generous giving to this year. Each employee will be provided instructions for both means of contribution in the next week. However, please note that the On-Line Giving System will not be open until October 1st. Also this will be the last year for the traditional pledge cards. For more information about the CVC Campaign please visit our website at: www.cvc.hr.vt.edu/ or call: 231-9331.
More details on the state program are at www.cvc.vipnet.org.
